  i went to school with a couple of jehovahs witnesses and they were ok people.some of you lot on here just need to get over it - i don't understand that if you were so bored with it -why did you get into it in the first place ?

  give it up - you made a mistake - get over it - or get therapy or something.. i used to go into school assemblies etc.

  and church occasionally and i was bored stiff so i presume its not something peculiar to jehovahs witnesses halls.i wouldn't go back now but whats the point in whinging about it like you lot?

  I've just re-read my post from last night as after drinking about 6 glasses of wine I couldn't quite remember what I'd written. Anyway, I think ridicule was too strong a word. But I do find many passages in the OT humorous and/or awful. As a historical book it is extremely important and the more I study how the bible came to be in its present form the more amazed I am with it.

  I think I've read in one of your posts that you feel the authors of the bible have tried to put into words some of their experiences of the divine rather than it being a literal explanantion of the past. I can accept that point of view and I believe it can apply to other books such as the Tao te ching.

  I'll start on lager and see what happens.

  All I can say is that if just one person leaves the cult called the Jehovahs Witnesses because of posts on this board then it really does have a point.

  It can take someone many years to recover from a cult, and boards like this one can help.

  Making 607 crumble

  during my eight month long study with "elder bob" (moms husband) we have batted around many subjects to say the least.

  but the one that really stands out is the dreaded date of 607 bc.

  im sorry i just will not let up with this date, and him having to prove it can stand.

  How many times do you have to have your arse kicked in these kind of threads before you give it up?

  There is abundant secular and biblical evidence in support of 607 as a calcuable and credible date for the Fall of Jerusalem.

  Once again, for the record, name ONE piece of secular evidence to support 607. And the 586/587 argument you keep bringing up has been explained to you time and time again. A real scholar would never bring this up as an argument.

  This thread has little to do with research

  My opinion about the bible has been formed by a tremendous amount of research. I agree with Pete that many ex-JWs struggle to shake off the literal view of the bible that we were taught.

  I do ridicule the Old Testament, as do many here, because it paints a picture of a god more imperfect than most humans. The emotions exhibited so easily by Yahweh of the Old Testament are the emotions I try to suppress, namely jealousy, anger, and pride. Some of the actions done in god's name are a complete disgrace.

  May I also add that after reading many of your posts I think it would be great to meet up with you just to talk about your personal spiritual experience, obviously over a beer or two.

  You're maybe right, that verse is more crude really.

  I was trying not to choose one of the many verses that describe ethnic cleansing such as Deutoronomy 2:34.

  Judges 3:21,22 describes the way Ehud kills big fat Eglon, king of Moab.

  "Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled out the dagger strapped to his right thigh, and plunged it into the king's belly. The dagger went so deep that the handle disappeared beneath the king's fat. So Ehud left the dagger in, and the king's bowels emptied."
